Gardening Hints for New Gardeners

Article by Fascha Oleyenkorvaiz

Gardening is an activity that every person can do. Even if you are convinced that you have a “black thumb” you can learn how to grow a garden. Give yourself time and eventually you’ll learn how to grow everything from flowers to food to trees! People fail at gardening because they assume that growing a garden is easy. While you should eventually find gardening quite simple, when you first start out there is quite a lot to learn. Planting and watering are only two parts of growing a successful garden. Here are a few tricks to that you can use to improve the quality of your first garden.

Decide which flowers and foods you want to grow before you begin the planting process. Do you love the idea of having your own rose garden? Have you been toying with the idea of growing your own herbs? Learn what you can about your plants before planting so that you can make sure to set up your garden correctly. Different plants require different types of care. You can easily avoid mistakes (like watering too often) if you learn everything you can about the plants you want to grow before you actually plants them. Other mistakes that can be avoided include putting the wrong nutrients into your soil Basically, making sure that you grow a great garden means that you have to do some research ahead of time.

Aquaponics Gardening

Whenever we mention the idea of gardening or growing any type of plants in our backyards the image that comes to mind is a plot of soil dedicated to growing vegetables and other plants. Not many individuals are aware of aqauponics gardening which is an alternative to conventional soil based growing.

In a conventional garden the needs of your plants are met by the soil, the sun, you tending the soil to rid it of weeds, you tending the plants by watering and applying fertilizer if needed. In a aquaponics gardening system there are three main components:

The water source which is usually a holding tank of some sort.

The fish that are cared for in the water tank.

The growing beds for the plants.

The fish’s waste is deposited in the water which is pumped into the plant growing bed which feeds the plants and at the same time is filtered before it returns to the fish holding tank where the cycle is repeated.

If this sounds fairly simple and easy; it is. The aquaponics gardening system can be very simple or extremely complex if it is used on a commercial scale.

Like the commercial systems an aquaponics gardening system at home can be complex as well, it depends on what your gardening goals are which will determine its design and complexity.

Great Gardening

If you are hoping that your green fingers ay produce you a stunning garden this spring, full of pretty blooms and colourful sights, then it’s not as much about caring for the plants, and more about making sure the soil is of the best quality.

The soil that you put your plants into needs to have a great richness of minerals and goodness for the plants to thrive, as the garden bed is a fragile ecosystem. It needs to have the right ph balance for everything to thrive, and gardeners are discouraged to dig, leaving the earth worms to take the nutrients deep down to the roots of the plants. It is also advised to steer clear of artificial fertilisers, as it makes the plants unhealthy, much like if you were to take steroids. It will initially enhance the growth, but the plants will not have the same quality.

Look at when in the gardening cycle a plant is due to bloom, and arrange the plants in your garden so they alternate, rather than having dead patches through the year where the flowers have come and gone.

Try peppering non flowering shrubbery into the mix to break up the colour, and keep the garden looking alive.

Another top tip from gardening gurus is to not overwater your soil, asd this can have as much of a negative effect as if you were to not water at all. If the soil becomes waterlogged, the roots can become clogged and unable to soak up nutrients.

What is the Secret to Successful Gardening

Article by garden.landscapiidr

Gardening is much easier and far more enjoyable when you know a secret or two.

Most of the enjoyment of gardening comes from the fiddly bits, the care, maintenance, and minor adjustments of the garden – as opposed to the bruises, tired muscles, and frustration, of the initial setting up of your garden.

The secret I am going to discuss, is pruning. Pruning is considered essential in gardening, as regards flowers, fruit, and keeping pests and diseases from taking over.

For many novice gardeners, pruning is a scary prospect, many believing that their pruning attempts will kill the plants. Let me clarify this, you certainly CAN kill a plant by pruning it, but this is generally only the result of over-zealous pruning. This is not some sort of contest between you and the plant, you are not supposed to be trying to “teach it a lesson, or two”, and it is not “war”.

Pruning is all about assisting the plant to produce desired results, like: greater abundance of fruit, or flowers; become more manageable; or, to remove diseased or damaged branches.
